Missing Them

Focus

At The City, we are tracking down all publicly reported deaths and logging them in a public digital memorial. We are also having the community submit names and stories and we write obits for those and add those to the memorial, too. So far we have nearly 2,000 names and about 300 obits.

 History

We started this project at the end of March and launched it in May. We wanted to track down every publicly reported death to analyze as a data journalism project but quickly turned it into a community engagement and public memorial project.

Launched callout May 8:

Launched public memorial June 10:

 Collection

For the 2,000 names, we’ve collected these data points: name, age, data of death, occupation, address, where they died, underlying conditions, race, gender, the link where the obit was publicly reported, a narrative from the family if it was submitted to us by the community, photos.

 Form of Collection

Collected in a database, images shared digitally.

 Emphasis

We are looking for all New Yorkers but have focused efforts on Black and brown communities in NYC.

 Time Period

The beginning of the pandemic to present.

 Public Access

 Yes. https://projects.thecity.nyc/covid-19-deaths
