There is also a substantial amount of period costumes and jewelry for those interested in early 20th century fashion. Researchers seeking to understand Prohibition on Long Island will find resources here alongside those pertaining to the legacy of New York real estate developer and politician William Reynolds (1868-1931) who started developing Long Beach as a planned 20th century community in 1907. While the bulk of the collection can be found onsite, digitized portions are accessible online at https://liu.access.preservica.com/archive with related digital collections on https://nyheritage.org.

Mattituck-Laurel Historical Society and Museum
The Mattituck-Laurel Historical Society is the custodian of the Hamlet’s archive which it displays in the Tuthill house museum -- the main structure on a homestead complex consisting of two SchoolHouses dating from 1790 and 1846 respectively, a Milk House (1880s), and a Barn (c.1900) all donated to the society in the late 1960s -2010. The Archive collection consists of over 1000 manuscripts on Mattituck and 5000 artifacts including 18th and 19th Century furnishings, all donated by local residents. The archive also includes an intricate card catalog of residents to facilitate genealogical research. The museum is an homage to Victoriana with all but four rooms set up to display the items as they would typically be placed in a Victorian home. Of the four unfurnished rooms, one contains a collection of twenty-four 19th Century patchwork quilts; another contains 19th Century women's hats and shoes; the third, 18th Century rifles, World War I and II uniforms, and a large display of miscellaneous items: a whalebone scrimshaw, a ten-million-year old whale's tooth, and a whalebone harpoon. Also on display are old cameras, and the first Mattituck Fire Department helmet from 1907, plus other interesting items. The fourth room contains a collection of 18th Century children's toys and clothing. The Mattituck-Laurel Historical Society and Museum is a useful resource on local history, and inquiries into the Victorian period. Researchers will also find in Curator and Docent, Mark Macnish, an expert on collection items and on their wider social significance.

The Historical Society of East Rockaway and Lynbrook (HSERL)
The Historical Society of East Rockaway and Lynbrook (HSERL)maintains the historic collection of documents, photographs, ephemera, oral histories, publications, and memorabilia related to the 3 mile-squared area that makes up the East Rockaway and Lynbrook villages of Nassau County. Few items in the collection remain solely in analog form at the Lynbrook Library and at offsite facilities. Most have been digitized through various grant-supported collaborations and the efforts of Society members. A significant portion of The East Rockaway-Lynbrook Observer (1975-1994) and the Lynbrook Helm Independent Review (1963-1976) newspapers can be found on https://nyshistoricnewspapers.org. The Lynbrook postcard collection (1910-1950) and the East Rockaway postcard collection (1900-1970) of both black and white, and colorized images depicting street scenes, hotels, inns, movie houses, businesses, and private residences, schools, churches, municipal buildings and aspects of maritime activities and village life are accessible on https://nyheritage.org/contributors/historical-society-east-rockaway-and-lynbrook.
For religious or genealogical research, the records of the First Methodist Protestant Church of Rockville Centre, NY. Book 3 (1872-1882) and Book 4 (1882-1896), and the records of the Old Sandhole Church (1834-1872) provide information on births, deaths, marriages, baptisms, general memberships and traveling preachers. They can be accessed here: https://nyheritage.org/contributors/historical-society-east-rockaway-and-lynbrook. The historic photographs collection records similar facets of everyday life dating from the early 20h century. Unique to this collection is an album of images (1912-1918) taken by commercial photographer Leo H. Bock. His subjects of Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, dough boys, village parades, local men and women serving in WWI, encampments, and buildings
provide a historical perspective of village life in the early 20th century. More recent life perspectives can be found in the ongoing Oral History recording of local residents sharing about life in the community: https://archive.storycorps.org/search/interviews/?q=lynbrook
Other items maintained by the Society are the scaled Haviland-Davison Grist Mill Museum (1689) model and the marble obelisk (1840) commemorating the wreck of two merchant ships -- The Bristol and Mexico off the Rockaway shoreline (1837). The legacy of restaurateur Henri Charpentier, famed creator of the Crepes Suzette, is also a local treasure. The legacies of these entities are commemorated by the Society through publications and annual community celebrations.

The Friends of Cedarmere
Cedarmere was the country estate of William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878), 19th century poet, civic leader, and newspaper editor. Bryant purchased the 40-acre property in 1843, naming it Cedarmere after the cedar trees which ringed the pond. The landscape was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) and throughout the 1840s and 1860s, Bryant purchased additional land, expanded the main house and replaced the 1770 mill with a 1862 construction in the Gothic Revival style. The Mill stands near a reflecting pond. The main side window has 'W' 'C' 'B' (William Cullen Bryant's initial) etched in the top panes. Now an historic house museum, overlooking Hempstead Harbor, the property is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Friends of Cedarmere volunteers work to restore the house and gardens to their former grandeur based on existing records of the original layouts and planting, and preserve and promote public use of facilities.
The Cedarmere historic collection includes items from as early as the 1600s including artwork; portraits, publications, periodicals, ephemera and 19th century home furnishings. The Cedarmere Library has a catalog of books bought by or given to Bryant, some with dedication signatures. There are 1208 single titles and 574 multi volume sets. The oldest volume – a 1609 volume of the Iliad by Homer is most noteworthy with the bulk of the collection dating from 1800 to 1878. A newspaper collection of The New York Evening Post where Bryant was an editor dates from 1852-1875. There is also a significant amount of Littell's Living Age periodicals (1844-1941) which Bryant appears to have collected. The weekly publication was an American general magazine largely consisting of selections from various English and American magazines and newspapers. Researchers interested in learning about William Cullen Bryant, his connection to the Hudson River School Painters, and his work as a Fireside poet, along with those more generally interested in the historic house and grounds will find a visit to Cedarmere most rewarding. Related resources on William Bryant can be found at the Century Association Archives Foundation where he served for 11 years as its third president: https://www.centuryarchives.org/caba/bio.php?PersonID=395&Search=7d221c96d3cef69f19c6885bcd449c3a

The Greater Patchogue Historical Society
The Greater Patchogue Historical Society works to preserve the history of Patchoque and make all historic materials available to interested groups and individuals. Its archive collection includes photographs, documents, audio visual materials, memorabilia, ephemera, and artifacts that chart the development of the incorporated village from a rural to marine community and later from a manufacturing to retail economy. Significant holdings include an ephemeral collection of postcards with local scenes and a business cards collection of Main Street businesses from 1930 to 1980. The larger photograph collection includes 5x7 glass plate negatives (1895-1915), and images by local photographers and photography studio owners Alfred Nobel Chapman (b.1884- d.1965) and E.E Brown whose works include images of churches, homes and businesses in Patchogue and the surrounding villages, as well as individual and group portraits. While the bulk of the collection can be found onsite, digitized portions are accessible online at https://liu.access.preservica.com/archive. Another strength of the Society’s historic collection is its documentation of persons who served in the military. Records from the American Civil War, WWI, and WWII of those born in Patchogue -- Patchogue residents at the time of service– those who eventually settled in Patchogue—those on record as enlisting in Patchogue – and those who died in service are preserved alongside other archival documents on local persons and events.
The Society’s museum and archive is located in one of two remaining Carnegie libraries in use on Long Island (the other is used by the Northport Historical Society). Tycoon Andrew Carnegie funded the $10,000 building as a gift to Patchogue Village which opened in 1908 and, today, the Society utilizes space for meetings, a permanent museum display, and archival storage. The Society’s work includes advocacy for the preservation of historic building such as the Swan River Schoolhouse (1858) believed to be the last remaining one-room schoolhouse still in its original spot, and its original foundation, on Long Island; and historic homes such as The Blue Point Station House (now the Summer Club Clubhouse) built in 1913; and the Avery Homestead.

Raynham Hall
The Friends of Raynam Hall, Inc., partners with the Town of Oyster Bay, N.Y. to maintain and operate the Raynham Hall Museum, a nearly 300-year-old home which belonged to Samuel Townsend (1717-1790) a prosperous merchant, and his family. The Museum carries on the name given to “the homestead” in 1851 by Solomon Townsend II ( grandson of Samuel). Solomon named the property after the home of the Townshends in Norfolk, England (no relation) perhaps in homage to it’s most prominent member, Charles Townshend, author of the Townshend Acts — a series of measures, passed by the British Parliament in 1767, that taxed goods imported to the American colonies.
The Raynham Hall Museum boasts an exceptional collection of archives and artifacts that provide an in-depth look at the lives of the Townsend family and their neighbors from 1740 to 1940. More than 5,000 items of furniture, works of art, household accessories, tableware, cookware, textiles, costumes, toys, and games are preserved and displayed at the Museum. Many objects have a Townsend family provenance. Highlights include furniture and other decorative arts made on Long Island. Typical of wealthy New York families of his day, Samuel Townsend’s business was intertwined with the economics of slavery and a bible in the Museum’s collection contains entries from 1789-1795 of the names, birth and death of seventeen people held enslaved by the Townsends, including a partial geneology. Samuel Townsend also operated a general store which provided a variety of imported wares. A ledger kept by his sons, William and David, records the purchases of goods from the Townsend store by other slaves in the Oyster Bay area during the 1760s and 1770s. This ledger is held in the collection of the New York Historical Society. Other Townsend family papers comprised of numerous manuscript letters, deeds, and voluminous business records, specifically those of son Robert Townsend (1753 –1838) may be of particular interest to researchers of George Washington’s famed Culper Spy Ring, a professional, secret intelligence gathering operation in New York during the British Occupation in the American Revolutionary War. A complete compilation of Robert Townsend’s account books (1773-1785) and other Townsend family papers can be accessed at the East Hampton Library: http://easthamptonlibrary.org/long-island-history/robert-townsend-account-books/. Portions of The Raynham Hall Museum’s archival collection is digitized, and can be accessed on the Museum’s website. https://raynhamhallmuseum.pastperfectonline.com and on https://liu.access.preservica.com/archive

Hallockville Museum Farm
Hallockville Museum Farm was created to preserve and interpret the history of farming on the North Fork of Long Island. It is dedicated to taking Long Island back to its family farming roots and exploring their relevance today. The Museum got its start with the preservation of the Hallock Homestead (the original portion of the homestead was built in 1765) and adopted its name Hallockville from the area – It is said that in the latter part of the 1800’s many of the houses belonged to descendants of Capt. Zachariah Hallock, and that caused locals to refer to the area as “Hallockville.” The Hallockville Museum Farm’s collection includes over 2000 documents and artifacts that relay information on the area’s agricultural history, local farms, and families. The collection dates from the mid-18th century to early 20th century, and includes antique farm equipment, antique transportation, domestic items such as homespun fabric, domestic equipment, vintage board games and other children’s games and toys. A unique document collection important to local history and genealogical research is the Virginia Wines Albums: a series of 20+ albums (proudly weighed at 181 lbs by Virginia, herself) on local families and institutions along Sound Avenue and Main Road. The Albums are organized in scrapbook fashion and include fragmented entries of maps, family genealogy, building and area photographs, portraits, diaries, letters to name a few. A portion is digitally accessible here: https://liu.access.preservica.com/uncategorized/so_39ec8f82-55a8-4c98-806f-806b446d46ce/ Another significant holding is Marie Wells Remer collection which is an extensive collection of artifacts from a Michigan family with Sound Avenue roots. The artifacts represent treasures saved across six generations of women from the early 1800’s through the present. They range from a table linen woven from home-grown flax by the donorsʼ great-great-great-grandmother in the 1820s to a dress made by Marie Wells Remer out of fabric featuring images of the 1939 Worldʼs Fair. Also included are ceramics from the 1850’s, silver spoons that were popular wedding presents in the 1800-1850 period as well a large collection of paper dolls the donorsʼ mother played with in the 1920’s and 30’s. The pieces range in size from baby teeth hidden by the tooth fairy in the 1920’s to an entire bedroom set purchased by a newlywed Sound Avenue couple in 1884. The original owners of all of these items are tied by complex kinship connections to the Hallock family who lived in Hallockville’s old homestead. Another extant collection is 98 oral history recordings of interviews with Hallock family members born in the late 19th century who speak about life on the Hallock family farm. These interviews were conducted in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The Society pursues this goal through its museum complex of several 19th century historic buildings on a 2-acre campus in the heart of Bellport Village: The Post-Crowell House (c.1831); Milk House; Gazebo (1850); the Shaw Blacksmith Shop; John Chester Boathouse; and Barn Museum (1904). The Barn Museum building was formerly a livery stable on the Bell House property and was built at the turn of the century by Bellport builder Robinson and Watkins. It has two floors of exhibits that permanently displays Captain Wilbur Corwin’s duck decoy collection; Emily Underhill’s American Tinware collection; and local photographer Frances H. Toms exhibit; the “Pig Skin Book,” a rare 1696 account of whaling expeditions in the area; miniatures of the Bell Brothers; early craftsman's tools and model ships; an art gallery of local scenes; antique toys and period dolls; toleware; tools; sailing memorabilia; ship models; typical contents of local homes; an early Sperry gyroscope and a copy of its 1914 patent; and an ever-changing display of artifacts and other material culture representing local history. The numerous exhibits in the Barn Museum offer a glimpse of life on the shores of Bellport Bay.
A major purpose of the Society is the preservation of Long Island antiquities and historic documents and the extensive collection of books, manuscripts, maps, postcards and other memorabilia is also available to historians, researchers and local schools for class visits. The Society provides gallery exhibitions, museum exhibits, and educational programs to the community. Its publication of studies on local history and culture provides knowledge and insight into the cultural inheritance of the area.

#16 The Almshouse of Suffolk County
Before 1870, each town in Suffolk County managed a poor house for the residents of the town. In 1870, Suffolk County established a county-wide poor house in one institution located in Yaphank in central Brookhaven Town. The Poor House was the solution to a wide range of social ills. In 1929 New York State mandated that all institutions known as a "poor house" or an "almshouse" change the name. As a result, the Suffolk County Almshouse changed its name to the Suffolk County Home. The Almshouse records are located at the Historic Documents Library in the Office of the Suffolk County Clerk at the Suffolk County Center in Riverhead, NY. The collection includes admissions records (1871-1952), death and cemetery records (1871-1953), records of pauper Indians (1904-1921), and financial records (1888-1936) created by Suffolk County employees during the course of work at the Almshouse in Yaphank, NY. Many of the Almshouse records were created in response to an 1875 New York State requirement that specified the content of records that must be maintained by every poor house or almshouse in New York State. The collection includes a wealth of genealogical and sociological information about governmental and societal interactions with the disadvantaged members of the community in the late 19th century.

#17 Railroad Museum of Long Island (RMLI)
Founded in 1990, the Railroad Museum of Long Island (RMLI) is dedicated to the restoration, preservation and interpretation of the history and artifacts pertaining to the railroads which participated in the growth of Long Island, its communities and industries. The Museum maintains facilities at Greenport, L.I., N.Y. and Riverhead, L.I., N.Y., and serves primarily the communities of Suffolk County.
The Railroad Museum of Long Island holds collections, and historic buildings and structures at two locations. The RMLI “Greenport Museum” is housed in the historic 1892 Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Freight House, a large space where permanent and rotating exhibits of Long Island railroading, past and present are showcased. It also hosts an HO Scale layout depicting Greenport in the mid 1950’s westward to Riverhead in the 2000’s. The approximately 3.4 acres that make up “the yard,” including the passenger station, railroad dock, turntable and the Museum, appear on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places. The RMLI “Restoration Site and Visitors Center” is located in Riverhead, New York. The majority of the Museum’s rolling stock and restoration work on the rolling stock is carried out there. Fifteen of the Museum’s collection of eighteen pieces of rail equipment reside here, along with its main offices, and the Archive and library.
In addition to an extensive archive collection of rail equipment, art, documents, ephemera, photographs, publication and toy trains, RMLI currently holds two primary audiovisual collections. Each of these collections are “Physical Characteristics” tapes, which document every track that makes up the LIRR and were used as training aids for train conductors. The RMLI has worked with NYU’s Regional Media Legacies project (RML) to transfer the files to an external hard drive to prepare them for reformatting and long-term preservation.

# 19 Southold Historical Museum
The Southold Historical Museum and Archives is located in the Prince-Bjerknes Archives Center named for Helen Prince and Clara Bjerknes, who together first took on the job of organizing the archival holdings. The Society has an extensive archival collection dating from 1650-Present, though the great majority of the holdings date to after the conclusion of the Revolutionary War (post 1784) with the largest part of our holdings dating to the mid 19th through the mid 20th centuries. A significant part of the collection is the over 9,000 photographs that depict local people, places, sites, buildings, events, weddings, funerals, etc. The archive also consists of original diaries, letters, documents, ledgers, daybooks, genealogies, drawings, and other related materials of people who lived, visited and/or worked in Southold -- The Ann Currie-Bell, Henry Fitz Family, Frank K. Hartley, Wiles Family and Charles Meredith Collections are examples of the latter.
The Society also maintains the Maple Lane Museum Complex of eleven 18th and 19th century buildings which showcases archival materials and artifacts in permanent and rotating exhibitions. The property began life as the home of the Society’s founder, Ann Hallock Currie-Bell. Her home, which was left to the museum in 1964, was the first building the museum owned. Other buildings were either purchased or donated and moved to the site. These buildings are currently open for the public and through educational programs that facilitate engagement with, among other historic items, the pre-industrial artifacts, collection of sleighs, carriages, and other transportation, and the museum's burgeoning farm equipment collection.

#22 Yaphank Historical Society
"The catalyst for the formation of the Yaphank Historical Society was a survey of the old homes along Main Street in Yaphank, done by Kathleen Cummings and sponsored by the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities in 1972. Since then, the Society’s aim has been to increase knowledge of, and promote interest in, all subjects dealing with American History, relative to and encompassing Yaphank and the surrounding areas. The Society’s modest Archive includes letters, manuscripts, maps, paintings, books, newspapers, diaries, and other documents, portraits, photographs, and antiques. The strength of the archive collection is documentation on early prominent families and their descendants. In addition to caring for these materials, the Society works to restore houses that are a part of its 19th century historic district, among them, the Italianate style Robert H. Hawkins House (c1850), and the first house that the Yaphank Historical Society restored; The Homan House (c1825), home of the Homan family who owned the Homan Mills throughout the 19th century and is an example of a late Federal/early Greek Revival style of architecture. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. And the Mary Louise Booth House Museum -- the birthplace and girlhood home of the famed editor/author/historian/ women’s rights activist/abolitionist. Yaphank is proud of her life and accomplishments and has restored her home in collaboration with the Suffolk County Parks Division of Historic Services.
