2022-23 Robert D.L. Gardiner Writing Fellow

The Gotham Center has awarded its 2022-23 writing fellowship to Elizabeth K. Moore, in support of her book on the history of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR).

Moore is a freelance reporter with twenty-five years of experience, focused on government and politics; a member of the Newsday team that won a Pulitzer in 1997, and former lecturer at Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism. Her project expands on a study prepared for the Rauch Foundation, exploring the history of the controversial rail-line from the days of ‘power broker’ Robert Moses to the pivotal governorship of Andrew Cuomo. The book looks at how America’s busiest commuter railroad was nearly strangled by the politically influential swing region it helped create, and how a shifting and social and regulatory climate finally allowed the project to advance in a time of radical changes for New York City’s commuter suburbs.
