Focus Questions:

  • What did it take to be a NYC longshoreman and why did the workers take such abuse for so long?

  • What was the larger social and economic consequence of this “problem?”

  • What was the impact of containerization on NYC’s geography?

  • What is the relationship between technology and work? What is a positive for many often hurts the few. When is it justified to use labor-replacing technology?
