“Satan’s Seat”: ?New York During Prohibition
Northeast corner of Bowery & Houston Street, in front of the iron-fenced community garden.

Created in conjunction with WNET New York Public Media, a walking tour based on the 2011 Ken Burn’s documentary “Prohibition”. On our walk we will discuss and explore the history, politics, culture and speakeasies of New York in the Roaring ‘20s – one of the most volatile eras in American history. Stops could include: John McGurk’s “Suicide Hall”, The Black Swan, Chumley’s and sites associated with Margaret Sanger, Al Jolson, Carrie Nation, and Fiorello LaGuardia. Between mid-May and early September the “Satan’s Seat” tour is one of a variety of walks offered as public “twilight” tours. Summer public “twilight” tours are lead Thursday & Friday evening at 6 p.m. & Saturday’s at 5 p.m. We rotate a variety of tours in these time slots. Please see our Schedule page for details for specific dates and times.
