Who were your favorite neighbors?

I can honestly say that the 5 locations where I have lived , I always had good neighbors.

Let's hear your experiences.

Paddy-Good point. As young kids in our Manhattan walk up's,we had some great neighbors that treated us like family. Some made up for the grand parents I never knew. They were always teaching us something new about manners, different types of food, world history, current events.
We had mentors at school,Boy's Club, jobs, but, our everyday neighbors were a big part of the direction we followed in life.
Life styles we witnessed and liked or disliked. Neighbors we admired or disliked.
One trait I carry until today is always being the NEAT GUY!
I use to help this guy wash his  car on Sunday morning, the guy was immacuate!

Memories we carried the rest of our lives!

Sal...In the Bronx, it was Molly Goldberg and her family.   In Manhattan it was the Arnaz's and the Mertz's, in Brooklyn it was the Kramdens, and in Queens my favorites...the Bunkers

Re: Who were your favorite neighbors?

Mr.and Mrs Myers. We lived in seperate buildings @1663 and 1665 !st. Ave but shared the same backyard facing, fire escape, on the 2nd floor. If I sat out there long enough when I was a little kid, Mrs. Myers window would open  and she would give me a bowl of ice cream. They were an older couple and left Germany before the crap hit the fan. Treated me like a grand child. Fritz Myer was a cool guy and played catch

Re: Who were your favorite neighbors?

Danny McNally was my next door neighbor growing up and my surrogate grandfatther as I never knew either one.  He was an old-timer who always had time to talk to me, from when I was a toddler through most of college at which point the landlord sold both our houses and we went our separate ways (sadly I lost touch).  He was likely in his 90s during the 1980s.  He was an alcoholic a large part of his live but appartently recovered before I came arround.

I great guy to talk with who had a fantastic book collection.  Often I would borrow books from his house for school.  We both enjoyed yardwork and had some of the best self-done yards in the neighborhood.  He told me great stories about baseball, recalling how things changed once Rith came along and how someone like Hore-Run Baker had to sock the ball a mile to get a homerun.  When I used to talk about fishing at Kissena Lake he would tell me time when he was a kid and how it was a natural shored lake, plenty of wild fish, and had a stone bridge separating the main lake from the smaller section (later filled in by the city).

Re: Who were your favorite neighbors?

There was a guy named Tony who lived in the furnished room house on our blcok. He worked in the Coke factory on 34th-35th and 1st. In the summer we would go by the factory and ask for him and he would always bring me and my friends some cold soda. That might have been my first real connection in this world.
In our building there was a guy named Macy who would take me to baseball games in the summertime. If he got tix for Met's or Yankees it didn't matter to me. It meant a trip to the ballpark and an escape from the city a hot dog and a soda and a bat or a ball or whatever was being given away on that day.
A lady named Betty Dearden would take me to the Central Park zoo and buy me lunch.
A guy named Sam Fox who was my mom's friend with a car and her movie buddy was another good influence. He always had differnt cars which were sometimes the result of somebody not able to pay off a street loan. He used to hang around in a social club on 10th just off 1st avenue.
I guess as a single parent my mom welcomed these events for some much needed alone time.

Re: Who were your favorite neighbors?

In Harlem neighborhood village on 128th [bet 7th and Lenox] neighbors helped us latch-door key kids grow up. While our parents worked, [shoes fasted to metal wheels with a key] we; skated on concrete sidewalks played dodge ball, stick ball, hopp scotch, jacks, pick up sticks and old maid cards.  When  street lights came on [day or night ] we were home and neighboors made sure every child whose parent was not there had something to eat.

Fifty or more families lived in neat-clean brownstone walkups across from PS68, schoolyard, and when one family struggled to pay rent, they held parties. [selling dinners]

Through the years, I have met and forgotten so many names and faces, but to this day, vividly remember  every name and house my neighbors lived in. One family in particular, The Efords, seven children, ruled the block. They eventually moved, became successful entreprenuers and business owners, [a few upscale in Harlem].

Those were the days!!!!
