Mary Elizabeth's Restaurant (East 30's)

Anyone recall this famous New York Institution that closed in 1985?

It was a favorite stopping place for shoppers of B. Altman,Lord &Taylor and Franklin Simons.

You couldn't beat their Soup Tureen(sp?) Luncheon special. Tucked away in the downstairs basement.

Homemade soup of the day, salad, caserole, desert and beverage for less than $4!

Mary Elizabeth's was my favorite place for a morning coffee and Honey Bun. The honey buns were to die for made even better when you smered on more butter for an even sweeter treat. ME's catered to the little old ladies at lunch who had the watercress sandwich's and a cocktail. The wait staff was mostly imigrant Irish women. I wish I had a honey bun right now.

I remember this place every day because I used to visit it almost all daily and I used to have corned beef salad type sandwich which is my favorite and sometimes I used to have coffee. Mary elizabeth evans started her career in 1900 at the age of 15 her whole family were engaged in the restaurant. This was very famous restaurant in NY.
