Re: Bushwick

Back in Bushwick

Hi Everyone,
I just happened to stumble on this site and yes I admit it. I'm a Bushwickian too! And I might say that I'm very proud of it. I lived on Evergreen Ave. between Himrod and Stanhope. Remember the Bohack supermarket on the corner of Stanhope St.
I went to PS 274 on Bushwick and DeKalb through 3rd grade and was then transferred to PS 299 on Woodbine and Evergreen into the IGC (Intellectually Gifted Children) program. Funny back then they just told you when you were smart and made no bones about it.
I went to JHS 111 into the SP program. Sad to say 111 is no more. It has been split into 2 schools- 347 & 349. Anyone out there besides me that remembers the school song- All hail Enrico Fermi, proudly ever true, dear Enrico Fermi all hail to you. Although some of the not so nice students used to say, "Dear Enrico Fermi-the H-ll with you.
Well I'm back in Bushwick. I got a job in  P.S. 299 and have been teaching there 9 years. The day I went to apply for the job I saw my 6th grade teacher (yes back then 299 went to the 6th grade) Mr. Dobren. I actually called him Doberman as in Doberman pincher- because that is what we used to call him). It was great and he actually remembered me. He is at Dial-a-teacher last I heard. He still hasn't retired.
We need more Bushwickians to return and give back to our beloved Bushwick. Give me a hollar if you remember Ms. Cook from PS 274 (the only Africian American teacher back then in the school), Ms. Clarke the music teacher at 299 (again the only African American teacher then in the early 70's) and Mr. Needleman the music teacher at 111.
Till then my Bushwickians.
Love, peace and great memories,
Sharilo

Menahan Street Bushwick

I went to St. Barbara's Elementary School until 1964.  Then, I went to Bushwick H.S.  I certainly remember the RIVOLI theater in Bushwick!  That is where my grandmother took me to see FORBIDDENT PLANET.  My first evening "movie date" was at the MADISON theater...that gorgeous movie palace on Myrtle Avenue!  Such an incredible staircase surrounded by beautiful mirrors and gold-gilded banisters.  Perry's Candy Store was a hangout on Menahan & Wilson Avenues.  Nicky's deli & Mr. Neumann's deli were the local grocery stores on Wilson Avenue.  Also, LaRosa's Bakery drew big crowds on Fridays with their personal pan pizzas!  Those were the days...

Re: Bushwick

All U ginnys...

Typing nonsense about "the good ol' days" and how nobody had to walk around in fear and such, your all liars!!! Bushwick was a slum back then and it's a slum now!!! The only difference back then was, you had all you ginny wop hoods robbing everybody, now you got all these mexicans and duminicans infesting the area. Soon they'll be in lovely ridgewood, fighting with the grimy slavic pigs to live on top of each other like animals.

Make no mistake, Bushwick sucked back then and it sucks now, all you dreamers and people trapped in some time bubble need to be smacked into reality.

History of Knickerbocker

Remember that fruit store on like 708 knickerbocker? Vinny was the 0wner. Remember Mr Frost with that Mini mart on the corner near St Martin? He was shot dead in the store early Sunday morning because he would not sell beer before noon. He reminded me of captain kangeroo because he was big and had all white hair

Bushwick/Ridgewood

In response to this person who calls himself Gumba Hater, it seems obvious that some Italian person either beat him up or took his girlfriend away.
I should't have responded to this B.S.but I did. I hope no one else responds to this BIGOT.

Re: Bushwick

So whats your point?

Bushwick still suks, you ginnys and all your ginny pride suk, and so do all the mexicans and duminicans infesting your leftover wastelands.

My hope is that all the midwestern grunge type transplants invading NYC, take over Bushwick drive up rents sky high, open up all their elitist bars and bistros, so that all you lowlives are forced to move to ridgewood, or better yet long island, where all you gumbah retards belong.

Re: Bushwick

vinny's fruit store on knickerbocker

Yes, I remember Vinny on Knickerbocker who has the fruit store.  He was my father, the greatest man I've ever known.  One summer he was visiting his family in Italy and they burned the store down.  He never went back.  We all moved to Queens.  I miss that neighborhood.  Mrs. Annie and her husband in the soda shop on Knickerbocker.  How come no one remember's Schotler's Deli?  Remember the really delicious rice pudding he would sell?  Of course, who could forget going to Myrtle to shop, back in the days when people always walked everywhere.  For me, my fondest memory is the library next to Bushwick High.  I went there to spend hours pouring through books.  Usually I came home with about 10 books.  It was beautiful in the Autumn watching the leaves fall and scatter along the street as I walked home from the library.  God, I miss all the simplicity of that old way of life!  Keep Remembering!!!!!

Re: Bushwick

Schottler' Deli

I remember Schottler's Deli very well. As a young boy  Richard Schottler and I played on the same Stickball Team on Jefferson Ave.
Was the Fruit Store next to Schottler's called Louie's? My Grandmother and Parents frequented that store, and another Stickball friend, Walter Friedwick worked there.

To All from this special time in our lives. I was Halsey Bop and Tot and as most of you may rememeber was requested to leave Brooklyn under court order. Does anyone remember the Saints - Rockaway and Fulton and the others. We did keep our blocks safe for us and our familys. Does anyone rememeber Mousey Martinize -  The Cross brothers etc. When I look back it was made us survive poor rich whatever and become who we are. Does anyone remember the one arm  Deli on the corner of the High School. Putnam park parkers and the sprinklier pool. Ciro's also had a pizza parlor up on Cypress and the Ridgewood Grove pool. Bleekers St . Went to St. Bridgets then to Bushwick. Gumba would of had his @@@@ kicked and sent him home with a note.

Re: Bushwick

Wilson Ave

I lived on Wilson Ave (320?) between Palmetto and Woodbine.  I lived in a "railroad" apartment above a grocery store.  There was drug store at the corner of Wilson and Woodbine that had a model of a 3 masted ship in a display case that I used to bug my father about wanting it.  A couple a doors from the drug store there was a candy store on Wilson Ave.  I remember my father trying to teach me to not take candy from strangers.  He set me up one day outside the store.  I man went to hand me a piece of candy.  I balked for a second and then took it.  My father, "What do you say to the man?"  I said..."You got some more?"  I failed the test.  Wilson Ave used to flood a lot during heavey rains and the sewer covers would sometimes blow open and shoot up in the air.  I Went to PS 106 for Kindergarden in 1959 and First grade 1960.  I think I also had Mrs. Wilson for kindergarden.  I remember in first grade walking to school each day.  I would leave the apartment and follow the rest of the kids right to school.  I cut out of school a couple of times with some older kids.  We walked to a bowling alley that was a few blocks from the school.  I would take my shoes and socks off and wade in the wishing well that was in the foyer at the entrance to collect the pennies.  I remember playing marbles, stickball, collecting/trading/flipping baseball cards, monster movie cards and playing the bottle cap game in the street called skellsey <sp> on Woodbine Street.  Family moved to the Island during the summer of 1961.  Nice to read some wonderful stories.

Re: Bushwick

Bushwick memories

Hi, I graduated from Bushwick HS in 1967 - before then it was JHS 299, PS 296 (do I have that right?).  I don't remember too much about the neighborhood simply because my older brother was into drugs and my parents thought that by moving us around they'd save him - little did they know!  Anyway, anyone from the '67 grad class still around?  If anyone knows the link to the Bushwick alumni site - that would be helpful too -  Loved reading stories of days gone by and although I did not reside in that immediate area (I resided in the FKLane district, Chestnut Ct, off Liberty Avenue) I too miss the neighborhood. I presently live on LI, but am planning to move to Vegas in the next few months - I'd love to catch up with someone from the old days - cyberspace has no boundaries!!!

Re: Bushwick

P S 106

I was doing some research on the Bushwick section of Brooklyn and came upon this great website. I was very pleased to read what many former Bushwick residents had to say regarding their time in the nieghborhood, especially those with experiences at PS 106. Yes, PS 106 is still standing and going strong. It is my understanding that the Putnam side was built in 1896, two years before the Cornelia side, and it is because of the two year difference that both sides did not settle at the same level which explains the need for the ramps in the hallways on each floor. The lunchroom is still in the basement with the four sections divided by the thick brick walls with the archways and the auditorium is still on the fourth floor. We can never figure out what those little side rooms were used for that are located on the side walls of the auditorium. Any ideas?
I imagine there are many changes in the neighborhood since most of you lived there. PS 106 currently has students from Pre-K to Grade Five.
Next time your in the nighborhood stop by PS 106 and say hello, oh by the way I almost forgot I am currently the Principal of PS 106. You can contact me at Platinumstar13@aol.com

Re: Bushwick

Roberto - PS 106

Regarding the "little side rooms were used for that are located on the side walls of the auditorium. Any ideas?"
I would ask the Custodian and/or the custodial staff member who has been there the longest, which is the way to go, (depending on who you get along with better), and any tradesman passing through who needs access to those rooms. If it was designed for anything more than just storage, one of the above should know. Take a good look yourself, is there conduit coming up through the floor or down from the ceiling? Storage and utilities combined in the same rooms?

Bushwick (and Mary)

I grew up in Bushwick between 1950 and 1968.

A friend of mine from those days sent me an E-Mail recently that said that a young lady named Mary was looking for me based on a reply I made a few years ago.

If anyone is in touch with the former Mary Calia, I would appreciate you giving her my E-Mail address.  I was her next door neighbor from 1950 to 1968.  She was my best friend growing up.

My E-Mail address is:

joepappalardo06@comcast.net.

Thanks,

Joe
