Yorkville Breweries, Ruppert Brewery, Ruppert Fami
Greetings to you all.
My name is Jake Ruppert and live here in New York City and I am a lineal descendant of Jacob Ruppert, Sr. (1842-1915), founder of the Jacob Ruppert Brewery (1867-1965). The brewery was located on the present site of the Ruppert/Knickerbocker/Yorkville Towers from 90th-94th Streets between 2nd and 3rd Avenues. I write to invite you all to share any memories you may have of the brewery or any of the other numerous breweries of the area during the era when the smell of beer filled the streets of the UES (Ehret, Ringler, Yeungling, Everard, Doelger, Haffen, Hupfel, Eichler, etc.). I am writing a family history and I so desperately want to include the impact (strong, weak, direct, indirect) our brewery had for the 98 years it stood in Yorkville. I hope to hear stories of growing up in the shadows and smells of the brewery, former employees, and maybe even those who once knew some of my family members now long since gone. Any stories, memories or photos would be so deeply appreciated. Thanks to this wonderful site can these memories be gathered and forever recorded.
My family members who made Yorkville their home also included Jacob Ruppert Jr., George & Pearl Ruppert, Murray and Cornelia Vernon, Jacob Ruppert Schalk, Anna Schalk & Dr. Archie Krieger, George Gillig, Henry and Amanda Ruppert-Silleck Jr., Ruth Silleck MaGuire, Helen Silleck- Holleran. Any memories of these or other extended Ruppert family member would be lovely to hear.
Thank you for sharing and preserving the memory of old Yorkville. ---JAKE

Wyndclyffe, Rhinebeck
I am contacting you on behalf of The Museum of Rhinebeck History and because I read the message to you from "Mike." First:
- to ask you to please let me know if you have definite knowledge that Jacob Ruppert Sr., at any time, ever lived in the house called Wyndclyffe. I have never heard that before. My understanding is that he bought Linwood at a foreclosure sale through the efforts of a relative, John G. Gillig, for $29,000. Linwood is in Rhinebeck, a neighboring property to the south of Wyndclyffe.
My second question is whether Jacob Ruppert Sr. was related to or socially (or through business) familiar with the Andrew Finks who bought Wyndclyffe. With the Finks were the Schwartzwieler/Conrad Stein families who were related to each other and bought or built houses on land that might have been part of the Linwood property.
If your research has uncovered any answer to these questions, I would appreciate your passing it along to me. Or if I can be of any help to you, do not hesitate to contact me.

Ruppert Brewery
I saw your post and believe that my father has some valuable information for you regarding the Rupppert family. Our family was very close with the Rupperts in Poughkeepsie and my father knows quite a bit about the brewery. I told him about this post and he suggested I give you his name and phone number. Good luck with your search!

Stein family
I am interested in your site as my Great Grandmother was
Josephine Stein Uterhart, one of the daughters of Conrad
Stein.
I understand that the orginal Brewery sign still hangs on a
building...or at least up until a couplde of years ago.
I am anxious to learn more of the family history. we do
have some in the attic also.
I currently live in Vermont.

I can recall riding the Third Ave. EL in the 50's and looking down on the vats where they made the beer. We could smell the beer from blocks away.

Wow, I am so thrilled to have stumbled upon this discussion. There is just so much history here, between the Ruppert family and the Wyndclyffe Mans. Hope more develops. Good luck to all.
Re: Yorkville Breweries, Ruppert Brewery, Ruppert Fami
Ruppert Brewery
I grew up in the 1950s on 92nd Street between First and Second Ave. I can still smell the pungent aroma of "Knickerbocker" beer brewing. I remember hearing stories of the Tap Room at the brewery where (I was told) one faucet contained water and one contained beer. I remember playing ball between the buildings on 93rd Street and trying to throw a "spaldeen" ball over the brewery roof from accross First Avenue between 92nd and 93rd Street. I also remember, unfortunately, the attempt to save the Ruppert Tower after the buildings had been demolished and vandals set the tower on fire. I remember the brass name plate, which read, I believe, Jacob Ruppert Brewery above the main entrance to the building on Third Avenue. ,I also believe that my Uncle, Frank Faulhaber, who owned a custom truck building business at 307 E 92nd Street may have worked on some of the Brewery trucks. The Ruppert family was always very supportive of the neighborhood and it was a wonderful time growing up in Yorkville in those days.

Brewery photos
Hi,
I just found this site. I lived on Second Ave. between 90-91th streets.I took some photos from my apt window of the Brewery, during demolision. I have a watercolor I did from the window that shows the large sign painted on the side of the building by Third Ave. Care to add these to your collection? Are there any photos posted anywhere?

Ruppert sign
I recently purchased a J. Ruppert sign that was found in an attic in Florence MA. It looks as though it hung outside of the brewery. I am not sure if it is authentic but I would be happy to send you a picture if you are interested please let me know.

Rupperts Brewery
I just bought, out of an attic in a massachusetts house, a sign that looks to be quite old and possibly was on the Brewery building. The metal sign reads "J RUPPERTS BREWERY, 92ND ST & 3RD AVE, LAGER BIER". Any thoughts on this sign? I have pictures.

Ruppert Family Tree
Hello To everyone. I stumbled onto this site while searching for my family tree. My name is John J. Ruppert. I live in Philadelphia where I am a established poet. I grew up my whole life hearing all the stories about my family and their lives. I'd love to talk to anyone about getting more information on my Ruppert family tree so I can share them with my family. My great-great grandpop was the late Jacob Ruppert's first cousin. I've seen my share of Ruppert Beer being drunk at parties while I was a kid. If anyone has any info for me I'd love to talk and meet some of my family around the states. Thanks.

Conrad Stein sign
Someone mentioned the Conrad Stein brewery -- I can attest that one sign remains, heavily painted-over but still discernible. It reads "Conrad Stein and Sons Malt House." It's atop 514 W. 57th St., now home to cbsnews.com and other CBS News facilities (including my office).

ruprecht? i own an "important" bench ,
ca.1880, that has "col.ruprecht's house"
written on the seat rail, probably made for

ruppert clock tower
Jake, I am writing a book on NYC timepieces and am interested in the clock tower on the brewery. I live very close to where the brewery once stood. I am told that the clock and tower was removed to Pratt Institute. Is that true?

Ruppert Clock Tower
Chris: You are absolutely correct; the face of the clock is on the Hall St. side of the Pratt Institute Power Plant. It normally is obstructed by trees but now it may be free of tree canopies blocking it. There is a gentleman there of senior management of the Power Plant (whose name escapes me) who knows much more about it. I met this delightful man during one of the many Slocum disaster memorials last June. Of course, the beautiful tower itself was distroyed by vandals in the late 60s as it lay within fencing awaiting restoration. Fortunately the heat from the fire was not strong enough to harm the metal mechanics of the clock, just the aged and rotting wooden tower. I have some family pics and more historical info should you be interested. Contact me at jacob@jacobruppert.com
