African Grove Theatre
A similar question was posted here a few months ago. I replied then with a brief three-paragraph summary of the history of the African Grove and the African Theatre. I wrote a book on these institutions a few years ago; check to see whether it is available in Russian libraries. The first 60 or so pages is an essay summarizing the story. The rest of the book is the texts of all references to the African Grove, the African Theatre, William A. Brown, and James Hewlett.
I also wrote articles on William A. Brown, who was the founder and manager of the theater, and on James Hewlett, its star actor, for the American National Biography encyclopedia, if that is in Russian libraries. I wrote these before my research was fully fininshed, and would write them somewhat differently if I could do them over. It should also have an entry by someone else on Ira Aldridge, whose first acting experience came with the African Theater, though he was not an important member of the company.
Otherwise, in general, whatever is in print about the Theatre is more or less wrong.
