Hi, all. A number of my ancestors emigrated from the Caribbean island of St. Croix to NYC in the 1880s and 1890s. The family was a mix of Danish and Mulatto. They lived at a number of addresses - some on the Upper East Side, but mostly in East Harlem (122nd St./123rdSt. near 2nd Avenue). I've tried to locate books on East Harlem's history, but most that I've found do not go back that far or focus on the Hispanic population. I even got a copy of Geraldo Guirty's book, 'Harlem's Danish-American West Indians 1899-1964' but it seems to focus more on West Harlem.
Can anyone recommend sources for learning about the history of East Harlem in the late 1800s through the 1930s? Thank you!
