NY great blizzard of 1947

NYC has had it's share of snow over the years. The blizzard of 47 was one for the record books.

Re: NY great blizzard of 1947

I'll never forget the blizzrd of '47. It arrived on my birthday (day after Christmas) and ultimately dumped about 25- 26 inches of snow. We had this great mound of snow right in front of my house which lasted (it seems) until April when all the remaining snow was black with soot. It was a godsend for kids and we reveled in it for days and weeks on end.

These days I have a different outlook on big snow storms (ha ha).

Re: NY great blizzard of 1947

I remember taking my dog out.

when I opened the door to my stoop my dog disappeared into the deep snow.
I had to lift the poor thing out. The snow was up to my thighs and way over my rubber boots
but it was real fun and good sled riding in the parks

As a young kid,I recall the Sanitation Dept. hiring day laborers to shovel the crosswalks with huge double blade shovels.
