Today's way of Grbing a cigarette

I was outside Grand Central Station today.  A guy walks up to a smoker asks for a cigarette and slips him a $1 bill.

O-I recall back in the early 60's buying a carton of smokes in the Army PX (N.C.) for less than $10.

Just saw a guy today paying for  one pack of Marlboro's with a credit card!

Sal, the guy that had the cigs could make double his cost at that rate and smoke for free!
I still see lucys sold in bodegas in certain hoods, never actually see the cost, it happens fast.

What were you doing at GCT? Where else did you go today in the big city?

Mike, the guy with the smokes didn't look like he was hurting for money. I had a small job at the Graybar Building and it was a quick trip in and out of the City.

When I was still living in the city, a guy came up to me one day and said  "Hey Bro, let me have a cigarette, I forgot mine in the machine..I thought that was a pretty good con line

Re: Today's way of Grbing a cigarette

When I was a student @ Andrew Jackson (1956-1960), we actually got a cigarette break after lunch. We went outside w/a teacher or lunch aide. There was a candy store across Francis Lewis Blvd that sold loosies in all brands for 2 cents apiece. So, for a dime we got 5 cigarettes & sometimes bartered them like the cons do. Lord how things change.

You're right Jimbo, the word "grub" is a term of the past. Can't remember the last time I heard it either. Another approach was "you got an extra cigarette"? One of my brothers in law used respond to that with "Nope. Every pack I've ever bought has only come with 20. Never got one with an extra."

Re: Today's way of Grbing a cigarette

I remember "can I have a butt" or "got a smoke?"
If the answer was no, then "can I have a drag?"

Cancer sticks or coffin nails, we used to call them. Sal, I'm thinking they were a lot less than 10 dollars a carton in the Base Exchanges on AFB's. Of course on GI pay, you bought the cheapest. Thank the lord I quit in my early twenties after 10 years of smoking.

$2 a carton in overseas military bases - 1964.

We'd call hooks or clips for the last few drags on somebody's cigarette.

Re: Today's way of Grbing a cigarette

Reege--You just reminded me of something. When my girlfriends & I would get together after school & didn't have any cigarettes, not even loosies, we'd go through our parents' ash trays & even the garbage, find the longest butts that weren't too damaged & clip a little of the ends off & smooth them out. Then we'd light them up & pass them around.  We called them "clippies". God, how disgusting. I can't believe I really used to do that. Thanks alot for the old memory.  LOL

Memories Ed. Usta smoke mom and dads old butts (discards) in my corncob out  back when Flushing still had fields. My friends did the same.

Re: Today's way of Grbing a cigarette

Used to hear the word "Chief "alot back then. "Hey Chief, can I bum a smoke"? When I was about 12,or so, we used to pick up fairly long discarded butts, unscrew our pens, and smoke them through the large end of the pen. A home made cigarette holder.
