elmhurst memories

Does anyone have memories of growing up in Elmhurst between 1959 and 1970?  I am researching for a book I'm writing.  I'm especially interested in anyone who attended St. Bartholomew's R.C. School or P.S. 89.  Any memories or perceptions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Kathleen

confirmation

Hello; Originally I was born 1967 and grew-up until the age of 10 @ Elmhurst. My father landed a job @ Citibank in Manhattan and we were soon tansferred to they're north location in Toronto Canada. I remember very little except that the area was incredibly diverse with respect to people and action. I have fond memories and still keep in touch with friends over the years...I have sent Email(s) to them regarding this site in order to give some input for your research. Just wanted to touch base.
Sincerely; Steven Mancini

Elmhurst books

Hello,
Have you tracked down these two books?

"The Future of us all" - Roger Sanjek
An ethnic study of Elmhurst/Corona 70-90
and
"Elmhurst: from town seat to mega-suburb" - Vincent Seyfried
a comprehensive history of the area from the Dutch onward.

I grew up in the area and now collect photos and postcards of Elmhurst. Let me know if you need any photos of the area 1910-1935.
Put me on the list to buy a copy of your book.
Regards,
Andrew Beirne

graduated in 1967

Hi,
My name is Denise and all of my family went to St.  Barts.  I recently went back to visit my relatives and we took a walking tour of the church.  I forgot how beautiful it was.  The neighborhood looked so different. NO more trees.
Do rememeber? Mrs Marcazi--the music teacher.
We opened up the youth center.  We started the plays. Remember the speed reading course and mass during lent.

That's it for me.
Denise

St.Barth's 1961-1969

It was the best and the worst time of my life. It was great living in Elmhurst, only if I knew then, what I know now. The nuns were dictators. There were a few who were nice, and the lay teachers were great. Thank goodness I was on the honor roll!!!! Otherwise, I would have sat in the front of the room and had been berated by the nuns.
In spite of it all, I did receive a great education.
I'll send more later, Deb Wasilewski

Elmhurst

Moved to Elmhurst in 1965.  My dad and his entire family went to St. Bart's as did I and my two sisters. I "graduated" from the boys school in 1971. Remember Mr. Gabreilli, Mr. Hobdy, Br. George, Br. Thomas, Mrs. Keller, Mr. Cutinella. Remember the Colony and Jackson Theatres, Fields Dept. store on 37th Ave.,Horn & Hardart on 82nd Street, Broadway Park (Clement Moore park?, Fairyland (by Newtown field), the German deli on 43rd Avenue.  Had many memorable nights in the park by St. Bart's (don't ask!)Neighborhood has changed tremendously since I moved out in '73.

Re: elmhurst memories

Elmhurst

first of all, thank you so much to all who answered my query.  My mother passed away on Dec. 1st and so much memory has coming flooding back of life in Elmhurst!  The nuns were like a bunch of mothers to me.  I had Mrs. Keller, who once accused me of thinking i was "the cat's pajamas," whatever that meant!  I was only eight at the time and remember that I was joking with a fellow classmate...  The neighborhood was Cuban in the late 1960's and my mother was very protective.  I attended St. Bart's from 1964-1969, which was when I moved from Elhhurst to North Babylon, LI. What a change it was, to be free to roam suburban neighborhoods, though it was much tougher than the neighborhood seemed to me in Elmhurst!  I now have a Masters in Library Science and live in Setauket, LI, but Queens is still so alive to me.  I visited my old home, which was then an apartment on Roosevelt Avenue, and which is now a travel agency, complete with bullet-proof glass in the waiting area.  What was once my living room is now an office, and my bedroom has become a storage area.  Very eerie.  I lived at 95-16 Roosevelt Avenue, went to school at St. Bart's, and had pleasant "arguements" with P.S. 89 kids, who claimed to have more holidays than we had.  I remember shouting to them across the street as we walked to school, comparing national holidays to religious holidays.  I think the nuns instilled in me a love of learning and intellectual curiosity, for which I am forever grateful.  Anyone wishing to contribute to my book can contact me here, or at khoran@suffolk.lib.ny.us.

Thanks again,
Kathleen

I too have many fond memories of growing up in Elmhurst, Queens. I went to St. bart's from 1964-1969, and lived in Elmhurst until 1976. I think I went to school with your brother, Kevin Horan. If memory serves me right, he was a close friend of a fellow classmate, John Flanagan. Please tell me what kind of book you are writing as I may be able to contribute something.

Bican Book Shop

I spent my Sophomore through Senior year (and some time beyond) living in Elmhurst 1961--1967.  My husband worked for Bican Book Shop for several years during high school and college.  John Bican passed away about 20 years ago after retiring to California and living near friends.  My husband and I married in '68 and moved to Chicago and finally bought a house in Oak Park.  We now live in North Carolina.

Re: elmhurst memories

elmhurst and st. bart's

Following 2 years of Franciscan Brother's sadistic abuse in grades 7 and 8, I barely made it out of St. Bart's in 1958. With a couple of exceptions, those "religious" guys were basically angry, hateful, animalistic and self-serving apostles of cruelty who enjoyed overpowering and inflicting physical punishment on 11-13 year old boys. There's an interesting movie called "Heaven Help Us" which depicts in astonishing and accurate detail the cruelties visited upon us by many of those Franciscans.
Oh well, I still liked Elmhurst and all it had to offer, living there until I moved to Long Island in 1970.
It's also been enjoyable to attend(when I can) reunions of the Classof '58.
Any other memories you're interested in?

Bican's Book Shop

cmf, is your husband Hans?

I worked at Bican's for several years, around 1969-71.

I had heard that John passed away around 1990.  He was a good person.

Re: elmhurst memories

Elmhurst, NY

I am a little late to the game having found this site only recently, but I grew up in Elmhurst and attended St Bartholomew’s grammar school from 1959 through 1968 (K thru 8).  I also remember the place and time fondly like many of the people who responded to your posting.  I was born in Elmhurst, and grew up on 43rd Avenue, two blocks from the school.  I remember all my teachers (Mr Gabrielli, Mr Hobdy, Bro George, Bro Cyril, Sr Rose Aquinas, Sr Innocentia…the terror) and places (Kodak’s candy store, Dandy’s Pizza, the German Deli on 43rd and the LIRR locales, where we hung out).  But mostly I remember the trees which gave the place a pastoral look, many of which are now gone.  Where I grew up on 43rd Avenue is now devoid of trees to widen the road and make it a one-way street.  I thought I was in Manhattan.  You can go home again, but you have to close your eyes to imagine what it once looked like.

How is your project going?  What info are you looking for?

St. Barts & Elmhurst

I grew up in Elmhurst and attended St. Barts for 8 years I graduated in 1975.  They were the best and the worst times of my life.  I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.  I remember the nuns keeping us away from the boys-they had the park we had the street.  I remember confession in 2nd grade and one young boy getting yelled at that he was going to burn in hell.  We all got so scared.  Looking back I would love to relive it for a day.  Every now and then I watch the movie "Heaven Help Us"  it reminds me of St. Barts.  Remember the candy store Kodac and Louie the Pharmacist.  82nd Street and the record store, Newton HS-I wasn't allowed to go there.  Great memories.

Elmhurst

I was so excited to come across this.  I went to St. Barts from 1963-1969 and lived on St. James Ave  under the LIRR tunnel--right near Neufeld's Funeral Home--which is still there.  I remember Mrs. Marchesi--the music teacher and her portable piano--she was a riot!  And Sr Paul Gerard, who was really strict, Miss Fee the 5th grade teacher who left quite suddenly and I think was hospitalized, Mrs Farrow, who was sort of the glamourour lay teacher, Miss Waldron the 3rd grade teacher, Sr. Mary Laura (who would make us sing songs like "Rock My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham"(!!!) and there was one nun who was really pretty and she left the convent--yeah, Sr. Justine. Also the play the Sound of Music--a girl named Monica played the part of Maria. I remember Sam's deli on Braodway and the five cent pickles and the Merry Go Round store also on Broadway where I got my first sled.   The neighborhood was not Cuban as Kathleen mentioned--it was mostly Irish/German/Italian with some Spanish speaking people--it was great because it was diverse and friendly.  I really remember Fairyland Amusement Park and would love to get a hold of some pictures if anyone can point me to them.  I had such great times there.  Anyway, Kathleen--please give us an update on your project--I'd love to see a book on Elmhurst!

Elmhurst & St. Bart's memories

Oh my goodness, I just stumbled onto this website and have been pleasantly transported back in time!  I grew up in Elmhurst, lived there from my birth in 1970 until I moved out in 1995.  I went to Kindergarten at PS 89 (Saint Bart's didn't have Kindergarten at that point yet) and from 1-8th grade at Saint Bart's.  Kathleen, I'd love to hear more about your book.  I've got so many great memories about Saint Bart's and the teachers.

I was married by Monsignor Gotimer in 1998 in the Saint Bart's chapel, and Fr. John Garkowski was the one who set the appointment for me before that.  I was so happy to have a priest - sorry, a monsignor - that I'd grown up knowing perform my wedding ceremony.

Does anyone know what's happened to the St. Bart's teachers from 1977-1984?  I remember hearing that Sr. Rena Perrone went to Rome, but haven't heard anything about Sr. Fleurette or Sr. Lilian.  I believe Mr. Straczynski is still there, but I remember meeting up with Mrs. Landas quite some years ago, and she had left to teach in public school.  I heard Sr. Loretta Ferris left the Sisterhood and was teaching as a layperson at Kathleen Gibbs school, but again, all my info is way out of date.

I'm so excited to find this website!  Any Elmhurst/St. Bart's old-timers please drop me a note at roehoo@yahoo.com or roesolo@nyc.rr.com.

Rosemary
