The Zombies

Does anyone know anything about a Bayside gang of  the 1960s called the Zombies. In March 1961 three of them killed a Manhasset policeman during a holdup. They were caught and went to prison. I am interested in any other information about the gang.

Re: The Zombies

Zombie info

Three guys were arrested in the hold up, Robert Moll was the shooter.  William "Red" Stanbridge and William Closter were the two accomplices.  Both Moll and Stanbridge were released from prison in the early 80's.

Re: The Zombies

Moll

Moll was first released in 81 but went back to prison on a parole violation.  The gang used to hang out by the Bayside high school athletic field and an infamous section known as "zombie alley" which has later been closed up

Re: The Zombies

Zombies

Thomas, Why the interest?  I happen to be researching crime because I live in area and my mother grew up on same block as Moll and her brothers knew of them.  I heard stories of them growing up.  Recently I realized a section of plandome road in Manhasset is named after Joseph Coote (The police officer they shot and killed).  Me and another Bayside resident are attempting to find the newspaper which has the pictures on it.  The cover has a picture if Moll, with his chest tatooed with "I hate cops"

Re: The Zombies

answers

That's Mrs. Margaret (nee Tobin) Hyland to you.

Relax with those capital letters Thomas, I'm old enough to be your mother.  I used to be a private investigator.  Now I'm wondering, are the Zombies old "pen" pals of yours?

Margret, are you from the area? Or did your investigating background give you some knowledge of this group?

Well Thomas, my spelling isnt really relevent.  If you have any real thoughts or ideas about the subject matter please state them, otherwise go back to the bar.  Try and do a little research and than come back.

Me and a fellow researcher recently retrieved a bunch of the original articles with pictures of the assailants and the infamous "I hate cops" tattoo

Re: The Zombies

Manhasset

Does anyone know anything about the Myles family in Manhasset?  I think one of them married a Hyland but I'm not sure if it is the same family you are talking about.

Re: The Zombies

bayside zombies

I knew the Zombies well between the years of 1959 to 1961. when I knew the Zombies they hung out around the old Victory bowling alley. They were only a gang of around 6 or 7 members then, smart parents of the day d  had their sons join the Services to get them away from the gang influence.Shultzee MOLL was the gang name for the shooter he had a brother in the gang as well his nick name was shmitee Moll. The gang completely disintergrated, after the Manhasset incident..Zombie alley might have been where the Victory Lane was I never saw them by the Bayside High unless they were playing football across the street in the park that was there. It blows my mind that the gang is still on other peoples mind as it is on mine after all this time..

Re: The Zombies

C lav, are you from that area? If so you might have known my uncles, specifically jerry and david.  I think they may have been associates.  are you still in contact with the individuals involved in the shooting?  I believe they were all released in the early 80's, and are they still in the area

Re: The Zombies

Zombies

I remember the Zombies back in the mid to late 50's. The Victory Bowling lanes was still a movie theater and the Zombies used to hang out in an alley that ran between the stores off of 32nd Ave. They bricked it up around the time they converted the theater to a Bowling alley probably hoping the Zombies would go some place else.
I was very young back then and I am surprised any one still remembers them. I guess there are some things you can't forget.
