Re: Bushwick
Bushwick
My family immigrated from Sicily and settled in Bushwick in the early 1900's. My mother lived on Star street and my father at 154 Wilson avenue..next to Bonsignore Funeral Home..now a church. There was a candy store in the lower level and we used to watch the St'. Joseph's feast pass by every year.
There was Valencia bakery and Giangrasso's on Wilson. The Iavarone's started their sausage business on Wilson Avenue.
What a great neighborhood!

Bushwick
I can't type through the tears - I too went to PS 106 - Halsey JHS and Bushwick - Miss Anne, Miss Wilson - Halsey Bops I love it. I lived on Madison Street between Wilson and Central on the best stick ball block - we had 200 feet of no car parking because of the FDNY truck 112..looking for old buds and remembering great days.
Re: Bushwick
PS 106
The librarian came across some photo albums from the early years of PS 106. We will be posting many of these class pictures on the bushwickbuddies.com website. We found class pictures going back to 1960, maybe some of you are in them or friends and family.
I currently work at PS 106 and hopefully my computer teacher will download these pictures soon.
Re: Bushwick
Bushwick
My parents owned the Wilson Hero Shop on Wilson between Woodbine Palmetto if my memory serves me correctly. Good Italian food – my Father was deaf and still worked the counter before going to his regular job. We lived in back of the restaurant for awhile and then we moved again to Wilson and Cornelia above the Corso Funeral Home. And then to Jefferson Ave. above the Italian cheese store. Looking for an old girlfriend Pat Smart anybody know her. We all went to PS 106 late fifties, Halsey and then Bushwick.
Re: Bushwick

Engine Co 112
Does anyone remember what street the firehouse 112 was on?? I lived across the street from it for about 2 years 1965-67. Was it Madison? We were the first Latins on that block. A car hit me on that block as I was running across the street and not looking(9 or 10 years old)Our Italian neighbor's really came to my aid and conforted my mother who was hysterical and did'nt speak English. I went to St. Martin also and got along pretty well with everybody. I remember a coner candy store by the school taht had a sign advertising Mountain Dew, you know with the picture of the Hillbilly's hat being blown off by the cork of his jug. We left to Williamsburg of all places, which is where we had come from. I could'nt figure my dad out, so it was back to the hard streets of Ellery and Thompkins and Public School. Lucky to have made it!!

I just got into this website and thought I'd see if there was any mention of my old neighborhood. Sure enough, there was. I grew up in Bushwick. I lived on Himrod Street between Central and Wilson Avenues. Have fond memories of Knickerbocker Ave.
In '68, we moved to Covert St. between Irving and Knickerbocker. We did a Folk Mass at St. Martin of Tours from '68 to '70. Before that, I was an alter boy at St. Barbara's.
I graduated Bushwick High School in 1968. Last year we had a 35th Anniversary Reunion in Queens. Loads of fun.
Remember stickball, skelly, "malteds" and a grocery store on Knickerbocker Ave. called Dilberts(No relation to the comic strip!!!)
Fond memories. I'm at the other end of Myrtle Ave. now. In Woodhaven.

Hi Joe, I think you are on line right now.. I remember Dilberts.. and the Knickerbocker Park. My uncles played pool at the jefferson st / knickerbocker pool room .. right on the corner! Know where that is? or should I say "was".. Some things do change.. Saint Leonards up the Jefferson street hill looks like a bomb hit it!

Re: Bushwick
Anyone remember the "chicken market" on Jefferson St. across from the Potato Chip factory.. or the train tracks (the lots) on Jefferson before the subway. There was also a halvah factory that made that sesame candy. Yes, it was a great neighborhood at one time. It progressively got worse but in the late 50's and very early 60's it was great!

Re: Bushwick
Hi. I was doing research for a project my daughter has to do in school. I saw some of you mention Schottler's deli and Richie Schottler. He is my dad. I grew up hearing about the deli and, of course, hearing about how good my grandmother's rice pudding and potato salad were. I do have her recipe and have tried to recreate it, but I'm not sure it will ever match. I'm glad to hear that people have fond memories of it. Although they sold it before I was born, it remained a cornerstone of our family.

Re: Bushwick
Hi guys and gals. If any of you are on bushwickbuddies.com and come across a woman named PAT, originally from 392 Woodbine Street tell her cityboy says hello, and I hope she and her family are doing well. I communicated with her on this thread in the first pages. She will remember.
